Inspired by...
Iron Man 3
&
Tony Stark

I've been on this geek chic kick lately of covertly going to work dressed up (or inspired by) my favorite TV/movie characters.  It all started with my Annie Edison outfit (which I shamelessly did not post here), and I'm not about to stop this trend.

It's no secret that Iron Man 3 was released this weekend.  As with many of my favorite movie franchises, I thought it exciting to attend the midnight premiere - or 11:30 p.m. "premiere" on Thursday night.  I bragged a bit during the week beforehand that I would be sporting a Tony Stark-esque outfit on the day of the movie's release.  The outfit is a bit of a mix between what I thought "Antonia" Stark might sport and the colors of the Iron Man costume itself...

Aviators - Clares; $2 // Earrings - Thrifted; $1 // Necklace - Target; $4
Mixed media vest - Forever 21; $17 // Top - Old Navy; Gift
Skirt - Thrifted. $5 // Bracelet sets - Forever 21; $3 and $5
Shoes - Thrifted; $5

Red and gold were the necessary bases for this look.  The red high-waisted skirt allowed for the lipstick and red accessories to stand out (more on this below).  Coupled with a black top and mixed media vest, it has an elegant hardware feel.  The gold shoes and matching statement necklace are the cherry on top.  Aviators were added for the necessary Tony Stark tie-in.  He rarely goes anywhere without them.

As for accessories, I couldn't leave the house without putting on my trusty Mark VII fragrance.

Add mixed media and metallic bangles, red and gold vintage earrings to bring out the other elsewhere in the outfit, and the effect is complete!

I made sure to wear red lipstick for the extra "pop", a bit of sparkly gold liquid eyeliner, and was accidentally sporting an Iron Patriot-eque manicure (easily done with a blue based nail polish and silver crackle top coat).

So you want to dress like...
Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan on Vogue

As May 10th looms nearer, Art Deco dreams are taking over my headspace.  I have many ideas for the upcoming surge of inevitably Twenties inspired looks sure to circulate on the web with the release of The Great Gatsby.

This week, Vogue hit newsstands with Carey Mulligan on the cover - giving those in the fashion world a taste of the costumed opulence to come.

How can the every day fashionista be her own Daisy Buchanan?  Well, Tiffany and Co. has decided to release a Gatsby inspired jewelry line.  I suppose that's one method.  What about the girl who's watching her wallet?  Today's post gives you a spring look that echoes Mulligan's elegant outfit.

Stay tuned for more Gatsby themed looks in the coming weeks...

So you want to dress like...
Q from Skyfall

Photobucket

If you haven't become intimately acquainted (and by that I mean gone to a movie theatre, sat down, and indulged for two hours in James Bond goodness) with Skyfall, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket ASAP.  In addition to the "I forgot to breathe" action scenes, there is stunning cinematography and even more striking characters to be had.  One of these is Q, portrayed by Ben Whishaw.

Unfamiliar with Ben Whishaw?  Fear not!  I would wage that the majority of the American public had little idea of who he was until this role.  In addition to being in Tom Hank's latest, Cloud Atlas, he's had the privilege of starring in BBC's The Hour and the latest film interpretation of The Tempest.  Out of all of these other roles, though, I find him most striking and confident as Q.

Since the premiere of the latest Bond film, fans have taken to the internet commenting about Q's "hipster" style of dress.  My responsibility as a fashion blogger was to take heed and rise up to the challenge of bringing you such style (for guys and girls) via this blog.

Let's do this!

For girls...
Photobucket

I have to admit that this all started because of a sweater.  That sweater in this post; that's it, right there.  I spotted it on a rack at Target last weekend while doing some Christmas shopping.  Apparently, Q's look couldn't escape my mind so easily.  I thought of the character instantly.

I would imagine girl Q to have a fairly well-developed sense of style.  Nothing extravagant - some color with a healthy amount of neutrals and simple accessories.  The look of the bracelets is supposed to be vaguely utilitarian and echo a sleekness that comes with modern computing.  The shoes and glasses add a "hipster" flavor.

For guys...

Photobucket

This set is a bit more "hipsterish"  than the girls' set.  Directly inspired from the movie, the color blocked sweater off sets the dark flannel shirt.  The gray trousers and tie lend a bit of a professional look.  The boots are my favorite piece in this set - illustrating functionality and (again) that never-to-be-escaped "hipster" twist.

So you want to dress like...
Arthur Darvill from Doctor Who

This post has been a long time in coming!  Due to various moving an internet issues, I've been absent for a little over two weeks.  I'm excited to be back and bringing you all the necessary fashion information important for your daily lives.  Okay, okay, so maybe it's not that serious, but I'm excited to be back all the same; sharing my love of fashion with all of you.

Today's post rounds out the trifecta of Doctor Who stars and their incredible fashion sense. Arthur Darvill is our focus today.  Arthur portrays Rory Williams/Pond - husband to Karen Gillan's character, Amy Pond, and second companion to the Doctor.  Like with our two previous actors, we'll be focusing on Arthur's personal style and how you, the reader, can emulate it.

Street Style

Photobucket

Casual, public appearance Arthur is undeniably fun.  The patterned sweater paired with graphic tee really makes this look stand out.  The vintage sunglasses add a "hipster"-type touch.  Though you can't see the shoes or pants Arthur wears in this picture, I thought it best to pair the loud top portion of this outfit with a simple pair of jeans.  I also chose Chuck Taylors due to the fact that Arthur seems to favor them in much of his outfits.

Pheasants, Pheasants Everywhere

Photobucket

I couldn't pass up the...uniqueness of this look when I first spotted it.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a sweater that was exactly like Arthur's, but I did find one that was pretty close.  It still features pheasants, which seems to be the important feature with this entire outfit.  I found a set of cheap bird print pins on Etsy to add that special touch to the crewneck. Paired with the sweater is a polka dot dress shirt and red chinos.  Again, Chuck Taylors round out the outfit.  I've chosen some simple, neutral colored shoes due to the rest of the outfit being somewhat "loud".

I'll be returning within the week to feature some hot looks for fall.  If you have anything you'd like to see here, please (as always) feel free to comment or Facebook message me.  I love to hear what readers have to say!

Until next time!

So you want to dress like...Karen Gillan from Doctor Who

I'm back again with another Doctor Who related post. This time, we'll be looking at Karen Gillan - co-star of Matt Smith and the Doctor's companion - for fashion inspiration.

Once working as a model during London Fashion Week, Karen is no stranger to the glam and glitz of the runway. Winning the Cosmopolitan "Woman of the Year" award, the Scottish Fashion Icon award, and TV Choice's "Best Dressed" for 2012, she is clearly at the height of style.

Today I'm bringing you two examples of premiere Karen Gillan outfits and my own interpretations of each for your own wearing pleasure.

Stripes & Hardware

Photobucket

This outfit of Karen's is one of the first she had worn out an about for a press tour. From day one, I have adored the sweater she is wearing. I felt like I had to use this look as the first for my post. There was no other way to go about it.

Because color is my friend (and yours), I decided to pair this sweater with a brightly colored skirt. Tights and the utilitarian boots and accessories complete this look for the upcoming season.

Unusual Graphics

Photobucket

Unfortunately, I couldn't locate a cable knit with a double decker bus pattern (much to my chagrin), but I thought another unusual graphic sweater might do the trick. Miss Selfridge is the maker of this lovely duck pullover. Paired with the neutral oxford shoe, bright colored pant, and neutral bag, this overall set truly captures Karen's original look. For my personal touch, I added a neon earring, watch, and nail polish.

Next week we'll tackle Arthur Darvill aka Rory Williams - another current companion of the Doctor's - for our weekly Doctor Who fashion inspiration post.

Until next time!

So you want to dress like...
Matt Smith from 'Doctor Who'

Today I bring you a solo menswear post! I haven't done this yet on my blog, but it's always exciting to venture into something new.

I have to admit that my "geek" is showing again. Last night was the premiere of one of my favorite shows Doctor Who, and its stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill are somewhat of a group of fashion icons. They all have quirky and fresh outlooks on what to wear in the limelight. For this post, we'll take the star of the show - Matt Smith - and breakdown two of his unique looks.

On the Street

Photobucket

Inspired by the bright color scheme of the stripes on Matt's sweater, I put together this very Fall appropriate outfit. You can probably guess that Matt incorporates "hipster"-type pieces into his wardrobe. He often sports unusual accessories (like his hat pin) and is never without a good pair of sunglasses. He also doesn't shy away from color.

Photoshoot Savvy

Photobucket

Remember what I was saying about unusual accessories? Matt doesn't fail to push the envelope with this look that includes the key necklace accent. There is also no shortage of color with this look as well. I've again adapted this look from a Summer photoshoot to a functional Fall look for men.

I hope you enjoyed our little foray into geek fashion. I plan on highlighting more actors from this series, so if you're familiar with Doctor Who and would like to see certain pieces featured, please let me know here or on Facebook! For now, expect me to be back later this week with hot pieces for Fall.

Until next time!

So you want to dress like...Fierce women of T.V.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would kill for some of the pieces certain women on T.V. wear. I've been known to watch a little bit too much television, and from this results in drooling over the wardrobes of characters in my favorite shows. This post details four amazing styles that are modeled by four awesome women of T.V. Don't forget to leave your own inspirations for dressing in the comments if you feel like sharing!

1) River Song
Photobucket

As seen on: Doctor Who
Portrayed by: Alex Kingston

Style profile: River Song dresses elegantly but functionally. She's hard and feminine all at the same time and never compromises her taste for expensive things. See the shoes she's holding in that picture above? Those are Christian Louboutain's! It's no secret that River Song knows who she is and how to convey that in her sense of fashion.

My interpretation: Bold colors, clean lines, hardware, and "playful" accessories are essential for pulling off a look like River's.

2) Divya Katdare

Photobucket

As seen on: Royal Pains
Portrayed by: Reshma Shetty

Style profile: Divya lives in the always sunny and bright Hamptons, and her wardrobe never fails to reflect this. Pastels and neutrals highlight her beautiful skin tone and add an accent to the beachy background of the show. Her clothes are also functional as she has to be constantly on call for the HankMed business.

My interpretation: Pastels, simple pieces, and contrasting accents in the accessories.

3) Helen Magnus

Photobucket

As seen on: Sanctuary
Portrayed by: Amanda Tapping

Style profile: Helen Magnus is one of the more ambitious and tough female characters on T.V. right now. She balances dealing with world governments, running her own tactical team, and balancing her 150 year or so love life. Talk about a woman of many talents! She's a woman who demands to be taken seriously just at the sight of her, but one who never fails to be wearing a great pair of shoes at the same time...

My interpretation: Neutrals, metallic accessories, and a "popping" shoe convey an "in charge" and feminine silhouette.

Helen Magnus inspired set

4) Leslie Knope

Photobucket

As seen on: Parks and Recreation
Portrayed by: Amy Poehler

Style profile: Leslie Knope is first and foremost her own person. She cares little about what people think of her and focuses only on her work and even more on her friends. She is never lacking in dedication. Leslie's manic and feminine, and her clothes always reflect this. She works for the city government, so she must be put together. Personality is added with fun colors and even better prints.

My interpretation: Fun prints dressed up with a blazer and neutral accents for the office. The bow belt and bow-accented shoe add a bit of femininity to the entire ensemble.

So you want to dress like...Sherlock Holmes & John Watson

I've been told that I watch too much TV. This is a fact that I will happily admit to. I also have somewhat of a bad habit of watching too many movies. In this day and age when movie tickets are $10 at best, I still spend my hard earned money gazing at the beloved silver screen. Oh, I know I'm not the only one.

Now, one of the biggest conventions in modern TV and cinema is the detective story. Today, I'm posting about not just any particular detective story, but one that is very dear to many out there - Sherlock Holmes.

I would hope, dear readers, that you are more than familiar with the characters of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson from the lovely Sherlock Holmes stories penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I hope that you are also familiar with the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and the Jude Law. In addition to this new take on Sherlock Holmes, there is a modern retelling of the story which stars two (virtually) unknown British actors - Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I suspect Martin Freeman will soon be a household name, however, as he is now Bilbo Baggins in the new Hobbit movie!

I digress. If you haven't seen the new Sherlock Holmes movie (A Game of Shadows) that came out around Christmas and (even more likely) haven't seen the TV show put out by the BBC, then you're in for an amazing treat today. The outfits I've put together for this post are inspirational collaborations which draw in key elements from the new movie and the BBC series. Let's get started!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

This movie is all about travel and gypsies and catching Moriarty...and Watson's honeymoon. Without giving too much of the plot away (as I have been known to be a bit spoiler crazy), Holmes and Watson spend a significant amount of their time traveling with a group of gypsies across Europe.

Above, we can see our heroes in the wardrobes which they wear for pretty much the entire movie. Not too much variation here. For my Holmes-inspired outfit, I've made the scarf he's wearing the focal point of the set. It's entirely bohemian and has so much variation in color. A great accessory to base an outfit on!

For Watson, I went a similar route. Whether or not this is because I'm obsessed with scarves is besides the point. It's also winter right now, and a scarf is an essential part of bundling up in the cold.

Here, we can see said trademark scarf which Watson wears for most of the movie.

Now for what I came up with...

For Holmes:

Sherlock Holmes Movie inspiration - Sherlock

Miraculously, I was able to find a scarf that strongly resembled Holmes' own from the movie. This look combines high fashion accents (like neutrals) with bohemian touches (the boots, scarf, skirt).

For Watson:

Sherlock Holmes movie - John Watson

I haven't put a flashy accessory in the Watson-inspired outfit as he is a former military man who dresses in neutrals and military-style jackets. You can see that the blazer is tailored with a high neck. This is the military touch in the outfit. The booties are my "gypsy touch" in this set, and you can see the look-a-like scarf which ties the whole look together in colors that just happen to end up matching. Very bohemian.

Sherlock (BBC Series)

This series has only produced six episodes to date. It's a sort of miniseries if you prefer to think of it that way. It stars Benedict Cumerbatch (War Horse; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (The Office - UK; The Hobbit) as his trusty doctor sidekick John Watson. These are modern retellings of the books with Holmes not being so bohemian any more, but more "designer label" driven. There is quite a bit of discussion in fan circles if the man wears Armani or Dolce and Gabbana. Watson has maintained his "everyman" look - wearing only simple shirts, sweaters, jackets, and trousers.

Above is pretty much the staple clothing choices for our boys. As you can see, John looks a bit more practically dressed whereas Holmes is wearing a suit, pressed pants, and dress shoes. The blue scarf and the coat (complete with red button hole at the collar) are staples of his character.

For Sherlock:

Sherlock BBC outfit

This look started with the shoes. I wanted a piece that would tie the original Sherlock Holmes to this modern adaptation. Oxfords were the solution. Sherlock wears neutrals in the series, with small pops of jewel toned color. His shirts are usually a rich scarlet or deep purple. I tried to bring that in with the shirt and the earrings. It goes without saying that the coat and scarf are a must. The signature look cannot be complete without them.

For John:

BBC John Watson

I again went with the "less is more" approach with my John-inspired look. John is nothing but practical - the complete opposite of his colleague who is nothing but flashy. One of John's staple looks in the series is also his cable knit sweater. There are also occasions where he is seen wearing generous amounts of plaid. I've combined these two looks into one fashionable statement that has just enough color to pop.

It was undoubtedly interesting to warp menswear into something fashionable and functional for women. Next time, I would love to do a menswear (for men!) post. If you are a man and a reader of my blog, please feel free to comment or send me and e-mail about what you would like to see! I'm always open to ideas!

Until next time.

So you want to dress like...Florence Welch

This week has been kicking my butt...but I have returned to once again bring you quality fashion advice. Today, we're going to try something new. The "So you want to dress like..." posts will be a regular thing on my blog. I'm very excited to announce this as a feature, and even more excited to discuss my style muse for this post - Florence Welch.

Photobucket

If you haven't heard of our dear Florence, she is the lead singer for a lovely and creative band called Florence + The Machine. Who exactly "The Machine" part of this group is, is a long story to try and explain. For now, let's just consider Florence. She is a stunning red head that never fails to sport color, geometrics, flowly accents, and a bit of sparkle on the side. These four categories can essentially sum up Florence's own personal style. Below, I'm going to give you four sets of clothes - each incorporates one or more facet(s) of Florence's style. There's even a set that is my own personal interpretation of imitating the lovely musician.

Geometrics + Sparkle

This one really took its inspiration from the picture above. Notice the overall shimmery quality to her dress. It's draped and geometric with the lines crisscrossing every which way. One thing you must know about Florence is that she adores looking ethereal. The draped quality to the dress and the way the stripes seem to stretch out to infinity convey this. There are also two themes to be had here: shapes and sparkle. In this casual outfit, the accessories give the casual top and jeans a bit of a twist and add a whole new texture to the set.

Sparkle + Hardware

Florence formal look 3

This look is modeled after her outfit during a performance on Saturday Night Live in 2010...

Photobucket

This is more of a direct or mirrored look of hers, with some colorful accents based on the bit of eccentricity she likes to add to her videos and outfits. I also can't stand a LBD (no matter how fancy) without a bit of color. The "hardware" on the clutch coupled with the earrings and dress make this an interesting mix of "tough" and "feminine".

Flowy + Fairytale
Florence's first album was a creative retelling of many fairytales and the weaving of her own. Often, I see pictures of her at concerts favoring a long, flowy dress design. Again, this is her exercise in appearing ethereal. This is only one example of the type of dress she usually wears on stage:

Photobucket

And here's my interpretation...

Florence formal set 2

You can definitely see why I chose the dress. It most closely mirrors the one she's wearing in this picture. Shortly after I stumbled onto the necklace. I will never deny a good accessory, and the color of the dress just screams for a light teal to be paired with it. I didn't want to overload the rest of the accessories with so much color, so I went with black accents and minimal teal (for the bracelet).

My take on Florence's look...

The dress has that blocked geometric shape with defined colors. The red earrings and shoes add a bit of accent color, and the skull ring and sparkle tights can be chalked up to trying to tie in our ethereal elements.

How would you pull together an outfit in the style of Florence? Is there a dress or a top in your closet just begging to be styled just like this? Feel free to comment below or send pictures! I would love to hear all of your wonderful ideas.
