So you want to dress like...
Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan on Vogue

As May 10th looms nearer, Art Deco dreams are taking over my headspace.  I have many ideas for the upcoming surge of inevitably Twenties inspired looks sure to circulate on the web with the release of The Great Gatsby.

This week, Vogue hit newsstands with Carey Mulligan on the cover - giving those in the fashion world a taste of the costumed opulence to come.

How can the every day fashionista be her own Daisy Buchanan?  Well, Tiffany and Co. has decided to release a Gatsby inspired jewelry line.  I suppose that's one method.  What about the girl who's watching her wallet?  Today's post gives you a spring look that echoes Mulligan's elegant outfit.

Trend Tip:
Spring '13 - For "Her" and "Him"

This post marks a "first" for this blog - a hers and his post complete with male presence!  My participant would like to make it clear that I did not style him; he is fashion savvy all on his own.

I'm writing this to illicit feelings of Spring - even though most of the country seems to be stuck in post-Winter funk.  I decided that the gray clouds are not going to keep me from rocking some of the irresistible Spring trends I'm seeing throughout the fashion world.

For her, florals (as usual) are in.  Below, I model one from Target.  Originally $25 in store and online, I managed to score my piece at a local store for only $7.48!   Online, it's being listed as $17.  Still not a bad deal, and the piece is incredibly versatile with pops of gold, light yellow, mint green, navy, cobalt, and red.  There are so many tops you can pair this blazer with!

As for the top underneath, this is a crocheted piece I picked up from a local thrift store a few years ago.  It's a versatile piece - able to be paired with outfits for Fall, Winter, and Spring!  Lace/open knits also happen to be on trend for Spring of 2013.  Layered underneath the floral blazer, I have a winning look.

To finish it off, I've decided to don red jeans (colored pants are always a good choice nowadays) and a neutral, brown boot.  My accessories are simple - thin, red headband, a set of three mixed metallic bracelets, pearl earrings, and a gold locket.

 photo spring2013trend_zpsca316d57.jpg

For my readers' use, I've styled it a bit differently.  Mint is one of the most popular colors for Spring, so I thought that should definitely be more present.  We bring this green shade out of the blazer by adding a necklace and ring of the same persuasion.  I've kept the earrings as similar to mine and also added similar booties.  You could further copy my look by adding a headband or even Emerald nail polish. (Pantone says it's all the rage...)

Now for the men.  This is Rene - boyfriend and wardrobe extraordinare.  He is here to show you what the guys should be searching their closets for this Spring.  This is a look for the "dapper man".  It's a little bit vintage, and a lot of color.  (Not an uncomfortable amount, I'm sure you'll agree.)

Once again, we have the colored pants.  These are Land's End - one of Rene's favorite places to shop.  I recently popped into the store on State St. in Chicago and they have tons of pairs for the upcoming season.  This is a trend you cannot miss out on!  Many of the pairs are also currently on sale.  In my opinion, this is a win/win.

Unfortunately, the argyle sweater in our set falls short of being as colorful as the one in the pictures.  Fear not!  I feel like this look is even more user friendly because of the toned down purple piece from Target.  I find that some men are too afraid to wear a lot of color.  This sweater seems like a happy medium for both sides.  The shoes are a simple neutral to off-set the colors in the rest of the outfit.  Don't forget the horn-rimmed glasses!  They complete the vintage flavor of the look.

I hope this post inspired you to throw caution to the wind and break out those Spring clothes.  We'll make our own brightness on these icky days!

Until next time!

Collab Happy:
Prabal Gurung for Target vs. Duro Olowu for JCP

 photo doamppg_zps9f0d52e9.jpg

Prabal Gurung.  It's a name that you might have been hearing tossed around in the last few weeks in relation to Target stores.  Who is this designer exactly, and why is this event so important for Target?  I'll explain...

Gurung is a relatively new designer to the fashion world.  Debuting his first collection in 2009 at New York Fashion Week, Gurung has quickly rocketed to the top.  Gurung's style is a mix of whimsy, color, and formality.  His designs have been worn by such recognizable names as Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence, and Zoe Saldana.

Why is this collection so important to Target?  Well, Prabal Gurung for Target was a bigger success than the Neiman Marcus collab back in December.  After that flop, many fashion bloggers were sure that the era of "Fast Fashion" collaborations were over.  Not so fast!

Prabal Gurung brought life back into the idea, and it also it made me completely forget about Duro Olowu's collection for JCPenney!

I can recall sitting on the living room couch after a long day at work, trying in vain to catch up on all the fashion blogger news of the day.  (With the long commute I had then - sans internet - this was a process.)  Somewhere in the shuffle, I spotted the announcement of Duro Olowu and JCPenney's pairing.

A Nigerian born designer based in the U.K., Olowu's prints are nothing short of unique and colorful.  Granted, there is a specific client base that is going to go for such a collaboration, but with JCP's past Betsey Johnson collection Olowu might be in the right place.

Why am I pitting these two collections against each other?  Well, from my perspective, there have been a lot of blogger reviews about Gurung's Target collection, but nowhere near the same number for Olowu.  I think both collections stand out for the Spring '13 season - sporting bright colors and busy prints.

(Clockwise from top)
"Nolita" skirt // $29.99

I categorize these four pieces as "winners" because of the popularity of these pieces and the fact that they had the biggest draw for me.  The Nolita print skirt was one of the popular selling items in the entire collection.  Surprisingly, my local Chicago Target still has a few left.  I might snag one if they do end up going on sale in the future.  The First Date print dress was the other piece out of the four that I saw reviewed as well-fitting and tasteful.  You could wear this for work or a night out.  It's the perfect transition piece!  The two colorblocked items are of my own choosing.  They're practical pieces with bright colors - perfect to dress up or down for Spring.  I still have my eye on that cardigan for a future purchase...

 photo pglosers_zpsc4f58954.jpg

(From top left)
Lace overlay top // $29.99
Ruffle dress // $39.99

A few of these items are online only, which may have contributed to why consumers were not too happy with their "in person" appearance.  I'm going to start this off with a personal critique.  I was excited to order the white and sulfur colored top because it looks so edgy and feminine at the same time.  I came across an online return for this piece in my local Target while doing some weekend shopping.  It looks nothing in person as it does on the website.  I was sorely disappointed.  First of all, the color is not a yellow/green as you would believe, but much more of a neon  yellow.  Secondly, the lace looks to have very small, soft shapes within it.  This is also incorrect.  The shapes within the lace look like large flowers and are almost gaudy.

I was similarly disappointed by the red dress.  There were also a few online returns in the Target that I was able to examine. (For the price of $10, nonetheless!)  From a distance, it looked gorgeous.  I'm attending a special opera performance in a few weeks, and wanted this dress for the show.  When I got up closer to examine the state of it, the stitching and placement of the ruffles looked cheap and strangely placed.

There have been similar critiques about the other two pieces.  That people saw them online, loved them, went to look for them in the store, and they looked cheap.  The ruffles and lace on the other blouses were also awkwardly placed.

Duro Olowu

(From top left)

These are the pieces out of the collection that scream "Spring" above all others.  Olowu's collection has many mixed prints, some of which I think would be a bit overwhelming for the less fashion savvy among us.  These prints are "fun" but do not sacrifice functionality for fashion forwardness.

 photo dolosers2_zps8a83f690.jpg

(From top left)

My picks for including two out of three of these pieces should be apparent even to the untrained eye.  I feel like the top two pieces "age" the wearer.  This comment is not to seem discriminatory.  These are just hideous prints that can do no good for anyone!  I adore the last print, but the neckline is what dates this piece for me.  Only when it is paired with a cardigan does it look like a piece appropriate for all ages.  This blouse is not a friend of functionality.

Have you had a chance to check out each of these collections in their full glory?  Do you agree with my reviews of the respected pieces?  Have I missed a piece that you're adoring/love to hate?  Drop me a comment as always...

Unconventional Styling - Neon

Much like last Spring and early Summer, neon is a trend that is not disappearing anytime soon. When trends don't seem to want to die out, it's better to embrace them than to fight them. Neon is loud and fun and (mostly) painless to pull off. Unfortunately, neon is also extremely unconventional. It's not always going to be on trend so it requires a bit of imagination to fit into your wardrobe. This is where my blog post today comes in...

This really started sometime last week. One of my co-workers was looking for a pair of shoes to wear with a dress she had ordered for a wedding. (See Set #1.) My (admittedly strange) first instinct was to go with a pair of neon pumps. She liked the idea, but apparently the people attending the wedding were more "conservative" with their dressing and she didn't think she would quite fit in. We moved on. In the end, we found a pair of shoes that would combine her "brighter" preferences and also allow her to blend in with the other attendees.

After the dilemma was solved, I couldn't quite get my immediate response out of my head. Yes, putting neons and neutrals together was a basic fashion step for the season but since when is this my go-to tip for styling? When did such unconventional looks become the norm for me? This warranted some thinking about.

What if you weren't afraid of trying those strange, not conservative looks out on the street, in your classes, to the beach, or to run errands? Even I hold back a bit myself sometimes. Below are three looks that "push the envelope" in styling. Two are simple matches that you can follow on example and do yourself. The third is a more complete look to challenge you...

Set #1

Photobucket

This is the look I had suggested to my co-worker. This is the exact dress she had ordered and the heels I suggested she pair the dress with. This also marks the first time that a plus-sized piece has been used in any of my sets. There will be lots more featured in the future!

Set #2

Photobucket

This is a great "bridge the gap" between Spring and Summer outfit. For those slightly chilly mornings or nights you have this fun poncho. Pair with neon shorts to give you a unique look and "bright" attitude.

Set #3

Photobucket

Here's our challenge for the post. I'll confess that I based the entire look around the tights. Tights are one of my shameless addictions. (Someday you may even get a post on them...) For such a loud piece, you need a simple neutral to tie it together. This is the purpose of the black dress. We've got neon pink nail polish and the purple heels to bring different color elements in from the tights. It's definitely a bit overboard - but in all the right ways!

Spring Sale Links!

Today's little Friday supplement is for all you ladies AND gents! I've rounded up some great online sale finds from some of my favorite retailers - Forever 21, Topshop, and Kohls. There's also a coupon involved! Let's jump in...

I'll do the guys a favor and post their set first...

Sale Set - Men
Croft & Barrow shirt + tie combo in Fern and Aqua

I tried to cover all of my bases for this set. Spring was the ultimate focus with my picks, but I also added a dash of adventurous color. I recognize that taking this "color leap" isn't for everyone. It is recommended that you start slow - dip a toe in the water - before you take the plunge into different colors. For example: try the darker purple chinos that are understated before going for the aqua oxford.

And the women's set...

Sale Set - Women

I shouldn't pick favorites, but the floral dress from Forever 21 would be the first piece I would buy from this set. It's easy to dress up or down, and the colors and style will be appropriate for the months to come. At $13.50, you can't go wrong!

Accessories were the funky pieces I picked out for the women's set. Topshop never fails to deliver. I feel like buying the Tiki brooch just to prove that I can pull it off. Admittedly, that's probably a bad reason to do anything, but I also honestly think it's different and super cute!

In addition to these sets, both girls and guys can use this Kohls coupon to get an additional 20% off via our old friend Couponjackie through Saturday, April 15th! Now that's an amazing deal.

If you have deals (especially from Kohls) that you want to see featured here, link me! I would love to see them and share them with the rest of you.

Until next time!

Trend Tip: Colored Jeans - To dress up or down?

Photobucket
This season, I'm finding it harder and harder to ignore the colored jeans trend. Not that it's a trend that I don't enjoy! In fact, I own five pairs myself. (If you're surprised, you probably haven't been reading this blog for all that long...) I've just found myself contemplating this trend more frequently as of late. Colored jeans have been around for several seasons. What exactly is making me focus on them right now?

I know some people struggle with the concept of taking advantage of this trend, but that's not my primary problem. I find myself judging the colors of said jeans in an attempt to categorize them as "fun" or "business casual". What a weird thing to think about, right?

Questions such as these are becoming more common the longer I write in this blog. I try to maintain a fine balance between dressing for work and what I consider "casual". Even my definition of "casual" isn't a simple t-shirt and jeans look. I'm always looking for a way to "dress it up". When I'm at work, I like to project a professional air. When I have the day off, it's the opposite. I prefer to show my "fun" side and exercise my talent for color. This is where the colored jeans question comes in. Are there certain shades of colored jeans that might look better when trying to dress business casual vs. everyday casual.

I've found that purple jeans might just be part of a "fun" outfit rather than a serious one...

Photobucket
Scarf - $10 (Forever 21)
Top - $13 (Forever 21)
Cami - $7 (Kohls)
Jeans - $15 (Rue 21)
Socks - $.97 (Gap)
Moccasins - $8 (Thrifted)

Yes, this look is pretty loud. It's one of my more loud ensembles to be sure. The best thing is, I just sort of threw this on and it worked out. Sometimes you get lucky like that in fashion.

My point really is, I believe it would be hard to appropriately dress this look down. Even if you decided to pair these jeans with the rest of the outfit being neutral pieces, they would still pop - unavoidably!

So what would I deem to be "business casual" colors? Here are some of my picks...

1) Red
Gap

This is a more toned down shade that sets you apart from the next person in your office, but it doesn't go overboard. When paired with neutrals, it blends rather than stands out glaringly. This color is classy and unique.

2) Dark Green

I feel much the same way about this shade as I do about the red shade I've chosen above. It's a jewel toned shade, so any neutrals you pair it with will look amazing. It also doesn't look too out of place with said neutrals. This is going to set you apart from the next but not get weird looks thrown your way.

3) Mint

I think this color successfully treads the line between "fun" and "office appropriate". I also couldn't get away with doing a Spring trend post and not have a pastel in the chosen mix! These mint colored jeans can be pared with tasteful yellows, nudes, and browns. Again, toning down the rest of the outfit is the key for you to pull off such an "in your face" color!

4) Blue
Gap

I can't decide if I'm cheating with this color. On one hand, these pants are a little bit more "blue" than normal jeans, but they still have the neutral properties a pair would convey. In my opinion, these are also a nice jewel toned shade which could be paired with a plethora of neutrals.

Now that I've done the more serious colors, it's only fair to give you my "fun" picks as well...

1) Pink
GAP jeans

This is a playful shade that transcends all seasons. Personally, I wear my pink jeans Spring, Fall, and Winter. They never get old. This shade is toned down enough to get away with even in the cold months.

2) Coral

Charlotte Russe jeans

Coral is a personal favorite color of mine. So, I might be a little biased with this look. Coral is an amazing color for Spring, and it can only really be worn in the "warm" months. Take advantage of this shade while you can!

3) Lavender
GAP jeans

This is a quintessential Spring shade that is easy to dress! Wear it with other pastels or neutrals. This shade is very "anything goes".

4) Aquamarine
GAP jeans

This is another shade that I think would be appropriate for three out of four seasons. I'm finding the strange impulse to go out and find jeans of this color because it just really goes with so much! Even if you don't like too much color in your wardrobe, I think you could settle for trying this shade out.

Do you own a pair of colored jeans or are you still afraid to try this trend? Feel free to comment here about your experiences or if you desire advice on rocking this Spring look! I am happy to answer any questions.

Until next time!

Trend Tip: Color Crush

I can't walk through a single clothing store right now and not find gratuitously shaded tees, jeans, skirts, and tights hanging on the racks. It's Spring once again, and it's time to break out the brightly colored ensembles!

It's no secret that I love color, and I love re-evaluating my look for a new season. I also love buying new items that add a bit of those specific seasonal trends without putting a dent in my paycheck.

Every so often, I'll see a piece that pops out at me from the blog or magazine I happen to be perusing. Then, I look at the price attached to said piece. Most of the time, I have to steel myself for the reveal. I nearly always anticipate that what I've seen is going to be incredibly outside my normal price range.

Tired of being shocked and dissatisfied, I took up a challenge: find pricey items I like and assign affordable (and equally adorable) alternatives for them! Below are my two sets of picks. The expensive items are on the left and their alternatives are on the right.

Photobucket

Photobucket

These pieces don't hold back and are not ashamed to be bold. That's what this Spring is all about - being bold and bright! Don't be afraid to show off your more fun side this coming season. After the drab winter, I'm excited to get out there and rock this trend. I can only hope to get you guys equally excited by it!

Have you spotted something you'd like to see an affordable alternative for? Post in the comments or shoot me an e-mail, and I will feature it here!

Outfit Post of the Day - Winter + Spring

I've just returned from L.A. where the weather was sunny and 70 degrees for each and every four days of my vacation. I'll get to my purpose for my California visit in an upcoming post, but for now we'll focus on the season that's fast approaching - Spring.

I couldn't tell you how many fashion blogs I follow which had comprehensive featurettes on how to bridge Summer to Fall looks back in September. Transitioning seasons while re-purposing clothes never fails to be a hot issue. It's also a technique that really encompasses the main idea of my blog - low prices and great looks.

I'm becoming alarmingly aware of the seasonal transition which is probably going to happen a lot sooner than later. I'm already finding myself wearing a lighter jacket and it's nearly March. For the sake of all of our wardrobes and budgets, I wanted to give you an example of a successful "bridging the gap" outfit for Winter to Spring.

Photobucket
Sweater - $4.99 (Thrifted)
Dress - $12.99 (Thrifted)
Belt - $8.00 (Ebay)
Tights - $5.00 (Target)
Boots - $11.00 (Wet Seal)
Earrings - $3.00 (Forever 21)
Bracelet - Gifted

Now, I'll admit that I cheated a bit on this outfit as I was wearing it in early February, but we have had a mild Winter for Chicago. It hasn't been hard to get a taste of the fast approaching Spring weather.

There are a few key things that you must pay attention to in this outfit in order to get your transitioning practice down...

1) Incorporate colors associated with the upcoming season

Again with the colors? Yes, yes, I know. Really, though, fashion's focal point truly is color scheme. I can only ever begin to tell you how important having a handle on colors this will be the second year in recent memory when pastels are a big deal for Spring. We're also going to be seeing neon accents if my sources are correct. In order to not make one overwhelmed by the "brighter" details of this look, I decided on my accessories as an appropriate display of the Spring color palette. You can choose any color that seems to compliment. Aquamarine just happened to match...

2) Patterns

I know you can't quite see it in this picture, but underneath that knit sweater I'm wearing a dusky rose colored dress that has lace and floral detail. These are essential touches in a Spring piece as I'm finding florals are also due to be "in" again this year. Find a "lighter" pattern which reflects the mood of the upcoming season to mix with your current wardrobe norm.

3) Don't forget about the season at hand

Make sure your base reflects the current season for which your outfit is appropriate. The fur lined winter boots, knit sweater, and dark green tights serve as my "grounding" element in the outfit.

In the coming days, I'll be detailing my wild ride of a trip to Los Angeles. Keep checking back!

Until next time!
